The Ontario Wheat Producers' Marketing Board participates in many government relations activities to represent the interests of Ontario wheat producers with all levels of government and on all issues relating to the successful production and marketing of wheat.

Safety Nets

Production insurance

  • Working with Agricorp, the OWPMB makes sure that producers have affordable programs that provide insurance against weather/pest related perils that may damage their crops. We are currently working to split the winter wheat plan into SWW, SRW and HRW plans

Variety Registration

  • In participation with the Ontario Cereal Crops Committee, we make recommendations to CFIA regarding variety registration that encourages the registration of varieties that most benefit wheat producers. In May CFIA announced the removal of the Kernel Visual Distinction (KVD) requirement in white wheat.

Grain handling

  • The OWPMB co-operates with the Ontario Agri Business Association (OABA) to make sure that producers get good value from the industry's service providers.

Wheat Grading

  • The Board meets regularly with the Canadian Grain Commission t(CGC) to discuss issues around the grading of wheat. In 2006, the standards for fusarium in Red Wheat were revised, providing more opportunities for producers to market their wheat. In 2007 the CGC revised its standards for mildew in Red Wheat.  For more information click here.

Export Standards and Markets

  • Working with AAFC, CFIA and other National and International agencies, the OWPMB facilitates export trade on behalf of Ontario Wheat producers.  Through the efforts of the OWPMB, Ontario exported 1 million tonnes of wheat to Egypt last year.
